Short Mountain Bourbon

Lucky for our customers, Short Mountain isn’t only interested in leaving our mark on the moonshining business.  This Spring, we’re releasing our brand new Short Mountain Bourbon, as well as opening the doors of the Still House Restaurant, a farm to table restaurant featuring locally produced vegetables, meat, and, booze from in and around Canon County.

While Short Mountain Distillery has been known for it’s moonshining since the Civil War era, we’re proud new members of the bourbon brewing business.  So proud of our heritage in fact, we thought we’d give you a little history lesson.

 The legend of bourbon dates back to our great northern neighbor, Kentucky, and the Baptist minister Elijah Craig, who was the first to distill whiskey in charred oak casks, giving bourbon it’s unique reddish color.  His contemporary, Jacob Spears, a resident of the neighboring Bourbon County mimicked the process and was the first to name his whiskey, “Bourbon Whiskey.”

Although these two men may have been some of the first noted bourbon producers, chances are a number of people in late 18^th century rural Kentucky were brewing bourbon.  And boy, are we’re happy our neighbor to the north passed the torch down to us!

The people at Short Mountain, the artisan Nashville distillery, are currently cooking up some extra special barrel aged bourbon courtesy of our friends at Mayday Brewery.  Keep your ears open.  Although our lips are looser than the original moonshiners, word travels fast around Short Mountain when new Tennessee moonshine is on the shelves and we don’t want you to miss out on the next phase, Tennessee bourbon!

Farm to Table at Short Mountain Distillery

Spring is right around the corner, and at Short Mountain Distillery, winter-thaw means one thing: good old-fashioned farm to table food at the brand new STILLHOUSE RESTAURANT

Whether you’re looking for a casual afternoon in our café, a classy night out with the person you love in our elegant dining room, drinks with friends at our speakeasy style wet bar, or are in need of a venue to host an event, Short Mountain Distillery and the Stillhouse Restaurant, at Little Short Mountain Farm, have an authentic farm to table dining experience to offer.

When you eat at Stillhouse Restaurant, you’re saying yes to local growers.  All of the food we serve comes straight from our farm and other local farmers right in Canon County.  And, of course, all of the Tennessee moonshine and Tennessee whiskey bourbon comes from our old-fashioned, neighborhood distillery.

Looking to make a reservation?  Our brand new space is still getting the finishing touches, but keep your ears open, because if 150 years of selling quality moonshine has taught us anything, it’s that good things go fast.

The tradition of moonshining in Cannon County dates back to the Civil War, when Short Mountain was home to 18 distilleries.   150 years later, Short Mountain Distillery is not only keeping that Tennessee tradition alive, we’re keeping it local, sustainable, and we’re on the pathway to becoming the first USDA certified organic farm in Cannon county.

Moonshine Heaven!

Moonshine!  We love it if it's good and clean but we about pass out if it's not.  Thus the reason for it being referred to as "fire water" on occasion.   Short Mountain Distillery in Tennessee really knows the distilling process when it comes to Moonshine.  Their "Hooch" is really smooth!
   Tennessee Moonshine  is a tradition not only in the sense of prohibition (how people got around not having alcohol available) but also in the sense of how families entertained themselves outside of the city centers.  The relationship to music and dancing is strong.  Family members would all learn how to play acoustic instruments at a young age and they would play together in the evenings in order to entertain themselves.  There were numbers of families that did not have the money for televisions and certainly did not have the money to take a drive into town.  As they got older,  the parties would ensue on the front porch along with a jug of moonshine.  It's the classic setting!
   Moonshine brings to mind images of rednecks tramping through the Appalachian backwoods, making white lightning in illegal copper stills. During the grim years of American prohibition, millions of gallons of hooch were sold, the demand greatly outstripping the supply. When alcohol became legal again in 1933, the moonshine trade plummeted. Today, “hooch” has once again become popular, inspiring TV shows and liquor stores peddling mason jars filled with shine.
   Tennessee Moonshine has now become popular at local establishments in cities across Tennessee.
